Natural gas is an increasingly popular energy source in Australia, but do you know exactly what it is, where it comes from, and how it can benefit your household?
What is natural gas?
Natural gas is a fossil fuel. That can seem like a bad thing in the current era, with concerns about climate change and other environmental issues, but the good thing about natural gas is that it burns much more cleanly than other fossil fuels, such as coal. In fact, natural gas is often seen as a useful transition point between our past over-reliance on fossil fuels and our clean energy future.
People are sometimes confused about the difference between natural gas and liquefied petroleum gas (LPG). LPG is produced as a by-product of processes such as refining oil. It’s placed under pressure to form a liquid, then stored in cylinders to be transported. Natural gas, on the other hand, is naturally-occurring, and is transported to your house via pipes.
Where does it come from?
Natural gas comes from underground reservoirs, where it formed over millions of years from the decomposition of organic matter. Some natural gas is found in coal deposits, some within underground rock formations, and some in larger reservoirs.
Why should I use it in my house?
Natural gas is used for a variety of household purposes, particularly cooling, heating, and cooking. The main advantages of this fuel source are threefold:
* It produces lower carbon emissions than any other fossil fuel, making it a responsible, environmentally-friendly choice.
* It’s one of the cheapest energy sources currently available, making it an economical choice for your household.
* If a gas leak occurs, it disperses rather than concentrating in low-lying areas (like LPG does), making it a safe choice for your family home.
